The 8th Pay Commission is of immense importance to the country's approximately 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners. The Pay Commission has initiated consultations with stakeholders regarding salaries and allowances. There has been no official announcement yet regarding when the 8th Pay Commission will submit its recommendations. Every employee is eager to know how significant the salary hike will be and the amount of arrears they will receive once the new pay structure is implemented.

The tenure of the 7th Pay Commission concluded on December 31, 2025. The recommendations of the 8th Central Pay Commission will come into effect from January 1, 2026. Historically, there is often a significant gap between the effective date of recommendations and the date the government actually implements them. However, the expectation is that whenever the 8th Pay Commission is implemented, it will be deemed effective from January 1, 2026; consequently, employees will receive arrears starting from that date.

How much could the arrears amount to?
If the government accepts the employees' unions' demand for a 3.83 fitment factor and implements the 8th Pay Commission by the end of 2027, employees stand to receive substantial arrears. Currently, an employee with a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 could see it rise to approximately ₹69,000 following the application of the 3.83 fitment factor—an increase of ₹51,000 per month.

If the government pays arrears for 24 months due to a delay in implementation, an employee would receive a lump sum of approximately ₹12.24 lakh, representing the difference in basic pay. Even if the arrears period is set at 18 months, the employee would still receive a significant sum of around ₹9.18 lakh. It is important to note here that the calculations made above are based solely on estimates and probabilities, as the Commission has not yet announced the official fitment factor, nor has the government announced a timeline. If there are any variations in the fitment factor or the timeline, the arrears amount will also differ.
