Central government employees have been eagerly awaiting the 8th Pay Commission for quite some time. Meanwhile, the Commission is holding key meetings across various locations to hear the demands of all categories of employees. Today, a meeting is scheduled in Kolkata, where the Commission will hold discussions with several associations.

Amidst this, a new recommendation regarding the 8th Pay Commission has been presented, which could significantly benefit government employees. A demand concerning 'Professional Tax' has been placed before the Commission. Let us understand what this demand entails and how it would benefit the employees.

**The Commission is seeking suggestions from everyone**
To prepare its final report, the 8th Pay Commission invited suggestions from all employee associations and unions via both online and offline channels. Additionally, the Commission is conducting meetings in various cities to ensure a comprehensive understanding of every aspect.

**What is the demand regarding Professional Tax?**
The Staff Side of the National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM) has raised a specific demand for employees. The NC-JCM argues that the pay panel should consider abolishing Professional Tax. The Staff Side stated, "We propose that all Central Government employees be exempted from the Professional Tax levied on their salaries by state governments."

The NC-JCM further added:

Employees are already required to pay taxes such as Income Tax and GST. Paying Professional Tax in addition to these imposes a double financial burden on them.

**What is Professional Tax?**
In India, Professional Tax is a direct tax levied by state governments on individuals earning income through employment, trade, or a profession (such as doctors, lawyers, or salaried employees). This tax applies not only to traditional professions but to every earning citizen.

**Is it levied in all states?**
Professional Tax is not levied in every state. For instance, states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab do not levy Professional Tax. However, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bengal, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh are the states where this tax is levied. According to Article 276 of the Indian Constitution, no state can collect more than ₹2,500 in professional tax from any individual in a single financial year.
