8th Pay Commission: From ₹18,000 to ₹37,800, ₹45,000, or ₹54,000—find out how much your salary could increase.
8th Pay Commission: If you or a family member is a central government employee, the 8th Pay Commission is likely a topic of discussion in your household. The biggest question is: how much will the salary increase? The answer lies in a single factor—the "fitment factor."
8th Pay Commission: While the government has not yet made an official announcement, estimates regarding the new basic salary are being calculated based on various potential fitment factors.
This fitment factor will determine the additional amount that lands in your pocket each month. It will directly impact not only the basic salary but also HRA, Transport Allowance (TA), pension, gratuity, and other retirement benefits.
What exactly is a fitment factor?
The fitment factor is a formula used to convert the existing basic salary into the new basic salary. Simply put, your current basic pay is multiplied by a specific number (the fitment factor). Consequently, the higher the fitment factor, the greater the increase in basic salary. As of now, the government has not clarified which fitment factor will be implemented under the 8th Pay Commission.
How much could employees with a basic salary of ₹18,000 benefit?
If a Level-1 employee's current basic salary is ₹18,000, their new basic salary could look something like this, depending on the fitment factor applied.
| Fitment Factor | Estimated New Basic Salary |
|---|---|
| 2.1 | ₹37,800 |
| 2.5 | ₹45,000 |
| 3.0 | ₹54,000 |
Note: These are merely projected calculations. The final salary will be determined only after the government's official announcement.
How much could the salary of Level-10 employees increase?
If an employee's current basic salary is ₹56,100, the potential changes could be as follows.
| Fitment Factor | Estimated New Gross Salary |
|---|---|
| 2.1 | Approximately ₹1.18 lakh |
| 2.5 | Approximately ₹1.40 lakh |
| 3.0 | Approximately ₹1.68 lakh |
Why is there a demand for a fitment factor of 3.83? The National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), representing central government employees, has demanded that the government implement a fitment factor of 3.83. If the government accepts this demand, the minimum basic salary could rise from ₹18,000 to approximately ₹69,000. However, no official decision has been taken by the government on this matter yet.
What happened during the 7th Pay Commission?
A fitment factor of 2.57 was implemented during the 7th Pay Commission. Following this, the minimum basic salary of employees increased from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. This hike came into effect in January 2016.
Impact beyond just salary
The benefits of an increased fitment factor will not be limited to the basic salary alone; an increase will also lead to changes in the following allowances and benefits:
House Rent Allowance (HRA)
Transport Allowance (TA)
Pension
Gratuity
Other retirement benefits
What is the current situation?
At present, the government has yet to make a final decision regarding the fitment factor under the 8th Pay Commission. Until an official announcement is made, figures such as 2.1, 2.5, 3.0, or 3.83 remain merely speculative estimates. However, it is certain that whatever fitment factor the government decides upon will determine the changes to the basic salary—as well as associated allowances and retirement benefits—for lakhs of central government employees.
