8th Pay Commission: Double update for government employees; 3% DA hike likely—will the allowance reach 63%?
Central government employees are awaiting the DA hike for July 2026. Here is the latest on the possibility of a 63% DA and updates on the 8th Pay Commission.
The coming days are significant for central government employees and pensioners. On one hand, there is anticipation regarding the hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for July 2026, while on the other, the consultation process for the 8th Pay Commission is steadily progressing. Currently, the government has not officially announced the new DA rate for July 2026. Meanwhile, suggestions are being sought from employees and pensioners during 8th Pay Commission meetings.
How much could the July DA increase?
The DA for central employees is revised twice a year, determined for the January–June and July–December periods. These revisions are based on data from the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW). In January 2026, the government raised the DA by 2 percent, bringing it up from 58 percent to 60 percent. Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners was also raised to 60 percent.
Now, the focus is on the new rate for July 2026. If the government implements a 3 percent hike, the DA could reach 63 percent. However, this remains a projected figure; the final decision will only be clear after the government's official announcement.
What is the status of the 8th Pay Commission?
The central government constituted the 8th Pay Commission on November 3, 2025, appointing Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as its chairperson. The Commission is tasked with reviewing the salaries, allowances, pensions, and other service-related matters of government employees and submitting its recommendations. To this end, suggestions are being gathered from employees, pensioners, employee unions, and other stakeholders across the country.
When and where will the next consultation meetings take place?
The consultation process for the 8th Pay Commission is currently underway. A recent meeting held at HCM RIPA in Jaipur concluded on September 1; it provided serving government employees with an opportunity to present their demands and suggestions.
Further consultations are scheduled to take place at the following locations:
| Location | Date |
|---|---|
| Puducherry | September 9 |
| Chandigarh | September 16–18 |
| Bengaluru | October 7–8 |
The Commission is expected to submit its recommendations to the Central Government by May-June 2027.
What is the update on the fitment factor?
The fitment factor is also a topic of discussion regarding the potential salary hike. A fitment factor of 1.86 was adopted for the 6th Pay Commission, and 2.57 for the 7th Pay Commission. Now, employee organizations such as BPMS, NC(JCM), and AIDEF are demanding a higher fitment factor for the 8th Pay Commission.
However, the exact extent of the increase in salaries, allowances, pensions, or the fitment factor cannot be determined at this stage. The final decision will depend first on the Commission's recommendations and subsequently on the Central Government's decision.
