River construction news: The Government of India is set to construct an 8.7-kilometer-long tunnel that will link two rivers, aiding in water management and power generation.
River construction news: The Government of India is planning to build a tunnel connecting two rivers. The tunnel will span 8.7 kilometers, with an estimated construction cost of ₹2,300 crore. The project is also designed to facilitate electricity generation. However, this development is a matter of concern for neighboring Pakistan. The government plans to commence construction on August 1. There are also various other specialized tunnels being planned to meet specific needs.
Estimated Cost
The construction of this tunnel will cost ₹2,300 crore. It will be 8.7 kilometers long. The project is scheduled for completion by approximately July 31, 2029. The objective is to divert surplus water from the Chenab River through the tunnel to the Beas River basin. NHPC will execute the project. It will be located on the Chenab River in the Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Subsequently, the diverted water will also be used to generate electricity.
How will the project be executed?
The project will be implemented in high-altitude mountainous terrain, with elevations ranging from 3,095 meters to 6,517 meters. Upon completion, Pakistan may face a water crisis, as India had previously adopted a stricter stance regarding Indus River waters following the attack in Pahalgam. The project will generate electricity in India, thereby benefiting a large number of people.
