547,000 Tonnes of Gas Imported; UAE Becomes India's Largest LPG Supplier
In September 2026, the UAE emerged as India's largest LPG supplier. India received 547,000 tonnes of gas from the UAE, whereas LPG supplies from the US dropped by 58%. Here's why.
A significant shift has been observed in India's LPG imports. In September 2026, the UAE became the top supplier of LPG to India, delivering 547,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, supplies from the US fell sharply.
Prior to this, the US had remained India's largest LPG supplier for six consecutive months. According to data from Kpler, a company that tracks maritime trade statistics, this shift occurred amidst tensions in West Asia and challenges related to gas supplies.
How much did imports from the UAE increase?
India received 547,000 tonnes of LPG from the UAE in September. In August, this figure stood at approximately 193,000 tonnes. This represents a 182% increase in LPG supplies from the UAE in just one month. The UAE's share of India's total LPG imports also rose from 13% in August to 39% in September.
In this way, the UAE overtook the US. This shift is significant for India because LPG is used not only for domestic cooking but also for various commercial purposes. Since the country sources a substantial portion of its LPG requirements from abroad, changes in supplies from other nations carry considerable importance.
By how much did LPG supplies from the US decline?
While gas imports from the UAE increased, supplies from the US saw a sharp decline. India received approximately 323,000 tonnes of LPG from the US in September, compared to 764,000 tonnes in August. In other words, US supplies dropped by 58% in a single month.
The US share of India's total LPG imports also fell from 53% to 23%, causing it to slip to second place. The US had previously become India's largest LPG supplier in late February following supply disruptions in West Asia, which had affected gas shipments from Gulf nations. Now, with supplies from the UAE and other Gulf countries improving, the trend of India's imports is shifting once again.
A decline in LPG imports?
Despite increased supplies from the UAE, India's total LPG imports fell in September rather than rising. India imported a total of 1.39 million tonnes of LPG in September, approximately 4% less than in August.
Did supplies from Kuwait and Qatar also increase?
In September, India also received higher volumes of LPG from other Gulf nations. Imports from Kuwait stood at around 133,000 tonnes, marking a 15.6% increase compared to August. Meanwhile, LPG supplies from Qatar rose to approximately 115,000 tonnes, representing a month-on-month increase of 76%. India received about 89,000 tonnes of LPG from Iran, while imports from Oman and Congo stood at approximately 23,000 tonnes each.
