India's oil and gas supply has been severely disrupted due to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz resulting from the conflict between the US and Iran. In light of dwindling LPG stocks within the country, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) are now considering supplying domestic consumers with only 10 kilograms of gas in the standard 14.2-kilogram cylinders. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the primary objective of this strategy is to ensure that the limited available gas reaches the maximum number of households.

According to company estimates, a standard 14.2-kilogram cylinder lasts for an average of 35–40 days. In comparison, a 10-kilogram cylinder is expected to last for approximately one month. The gas saved through this reduction would be utilized to meet the demand of households where cylinders are nearing depletion. If this plan is implemented, new stickers will be affixed to the cylinders, and their prices will be reduced in proportion to the reduced weight.

90% of LPG sourced from Gulf Nations

India meets approximately 60% of its LPG requirements through imports. A staggering 90% of this LPG supply originates from the Gulf nations. Currently, the supply chain has been completely disrupted due to escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. The status of incoming LPG shipments from the Gulf region remains a matter of grave concern. Last week, only two vessels carrying gas arrived in the country; these shipments totaled 92,700 tons of LPG—a quantity equivalent to merely one day's consumption for India. At present, six Indian-flagged LPG tankers remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, awaiting clearance to proceed. The warning issued by Donald Trump to Iran has further exacerbated this crisis.

Daily Consumption: 93,500 Tons

India's daily LPG consumption stands at approximately 93,500 tons. Of this total, 86%—or roughly 80,400 tons—is consumed by domestic households. Total consumption declined by 17% during the first fortnight of March. Describing the situation as "concerning," Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum, has advised using gas judiciously. Although the government claims that domestic supply is currently regular, there is a sense of panic among the public.
