10 major schemes for daughters—from the Centre to the states..
Various schemes are being implemented across the country for the welfare of daughters. While the Central Government runs initiatives for their upliftment, individual states also have their own special schemes. If you have daughters, you should certainly be aware of these schemes, as they can help secure your daughters' futures. These schemes offer various benefits covering everything from education to career prospects and marriage.
The Central Government runs schemes such as the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Balika Samriddhi Yojana. Similarly, states have their own initiatives: the Kanya Sumangla Yojana in UP, Kanya Suraksha Yojana in Bihar, Ladli Laxmi Yojana in MP, and Rajshree Yojana in Rajasthan. Let us take a look at these schemes.
**Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana**
This is a Central Government scheme under which an account can be opened in a bank or post office for a daughter under the age of 10. The government offers a high interest rate of 8.2 percent on this account. You can open this account to fund your daughter's higher education, career, and marriage; the accumulated interest can help build a substantial corpus for her future.
**Balika Samriddhi Yojana**
This is another scheme run by the Central Government. Under the Balika Samriddhi Yojana, daughters from families living below the poverty line receive ₹500 at birth and an annual scholarship ranging from ₹300 to ₹1,000 up to Class 10.
**Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangla Yojana (UP)**
The Uttar Pradesh government provides financial assistance totaling ₹25,000 under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangla Yojana, distributed in six stages from a daughter's birth through to her higher education. An initial amount of ₹5,000 is provided at birth. Subsequently, ₹2,000 is given after one year upon completion of vaccinations; ₹3,000 upon admission to Class 1; ₹3,000 upon entering Class 6; ₹5,000 upon entering Class 9; and ₹7,000 upon obtaining a bachelor's degree. This amounts to a total of ₹25,000.
**Mukhyamantri Kanya Suraksha Yojana in Bihar**
The Mukhyamantri Kanya Suraksha Yojana was launched in Bihar in 2007. Under this scheme, parents receive ₹2,000 upon the birth of a daughter; this amount is invested in a Fixed Deposit (FD) and handed over to the daughter, along with accrued interest, after she turns 18.
**Ladli Laxmi Yojana in Madhya Pradesh**
Under this scheme, the state government deposits ₹6,000 annually for five consecutive years—starting from the time of registration—into National Savings Certificates (NSCs) for the daughter. Financial assistance is provided in a phased manner upon enrollment in classes 6, 9, 11, and 12. A monthly allowance of ₹200 is provided during secondary education. Additionally, a sum of ₹1 lakh is awarded at the age of 21, following the completion of Class 12.
**Rajshree Yojana in Rajasthan**
The Rajasthan government provides financial assistance totaling ₹50,000 in various stages, spanning from the daughter's birth until she passes Class 12.
**Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Yojana in Maharashtra**
The Maharashtra government also provides financial assistance to daughters from poor families to ensure a better life. The government gives ₹5,000 to the mother when the daughter turns 18. Families with two daughters receive ₹25,000.
**Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana in Uttarakhand**
The Uttarakhand government makes a Fixed Deposit (FD) payment of ₹5,000 in the mother's name upon the birth of a daughter. This scheme covers up to two daughters per family. The deposited amount, along with interest, is paid out when the daughters turn 18.
**Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana in Delhi**
A scheme for the upliftment of daughters is also being implemented in the capital, Delhi. Under this scheme, approximately ₹1 lakh is provided to daughters in various stages—from birth through to graduation—with the final payout made at the age of 21.
Kanyashree Prakalpa Scheme in Bengal
Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to girls aged 13 to 18 to prevent child marriage and support higher education. A lump-sum financial aid of ₹25,000 is given upon attaining the age of 18.
