YouTube Earnings: A new avenue for YouTube income—creators will now be able to earn by selling products from Amazon and Meesho as well.
The earning potential for YouTube creators has expanded significantly. They no longer need to rely solely on revenue from video views and advertisements. Major e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, AJIO, Meesho, Snapdeal, and Tata CLiQ have joined the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program. This means creators can tag products from these platforms in their videos or Shorts; if a viewer makes a purchase via that link, the creator can earn a commission.
To illustrate, imagine a creator reviewing a mobile phone or discussing a dress, cosmetic item, gadget, or home product. They no longer need to simply mention the product name and direct viewers to an external website; instead, they can tag the product directly within the video. If a viewer clicks the link and makes a purchase, the creator becomes eligible for a commission on that sale. Essentially, the video can now function not just as content, but also as a digital storefront.
**Launched in 2024**
The YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program was launched in India in 2024, and its shopping catalog is now being expanded. The addition of major names like Amazon, AJIO, and Meesho provides creators with access to a vast range of products. This offers greater opportunities—particularly for creators in the fashion, beauty, electronics, home, and lifestyle niches—to monetize their videos. Platforms such as Flipkart, Myntra, Nykaa, Purplle, Shopsy, and Tira were already part of this catalog.
**Option to Tag Products in Older Videos**
A key feature of this program is that creators are not limited to adding products only to new videos; eligible creators can also tag products in their older videos. There is also the facility to promote products in Shorts and livestreams. Eligible creators with more than 500 subscribers can sign up for this program. In India, more than 50% of eligible creators have already joined the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program, and products have been tagged in over 19 million videos.
YouTube’s focus extends beyond just affiliate links. The company is also introducing AI tools to facilitate deals between creators and brands. These include 'Ask Studio for Brand Partnerships,' a tool within YouTube Studio that helps creators draft pitches for brand campaigns and answer brand-related queries. Essentially, the platform aims to expand creators' revenue streams beyond advertising to include brand deals and product sales.
**Testing of Dynamic Brand Segments**
Additionally, YouTube is testing 'Dynamic Brand Segments.' This feature will allow creators to insert brand segments into up to 20 long-form videos simultaneously. These segments can be targeted based on location and will include an in-built shelf alongside a call-to-action button within the video. Simply put, YouTube is gradually evolving into a platform where creators can produce videos, showcase products, and earn revenue from sales generated directly through that content.
