The trend of creating songs with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on the rise. Consequently, it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between authentic songs and those generated by AI. Keeping this in mind, YouTube has decided to implement labels on its platform to identify AI-generated songs. The company states that this initiative aims to help listeners distinguish genuine music.

According to ANI, YouTube mentioned in a blog post that generative AI enables artists to create music in novel ways, experiment with new ideas, and share their work with audiences. However, listeners often want to know whether the song they are hearing was created using AI or composed by an artist.

Labeling Introduced on YouTube Music

As reported by *Variety*, the labeling of AI-generated songs began on YouTube Music this Wednesday. This feature will soon be extended to the main YouTube platform as well. These labels will be applied to songs identified—either through YouTube’s own detection tools or via its music partners—as having been created primarily with the help of generative AI.

Apple Music and Spotify Are Also Taking Steps

Other music streaming platforms are also taking initiatives to identify AI-generated music:

Apple Music: In August, the company announced that it would introduce a "Made by AI" label for songs by the end of this year.

Spotify: The platform is working on a plan to label the profiles of artists who appear to be AI-generated as "AI Personas."

Tidal: The company has pledged to label AI-generated songs and prevent such tracks from earning royalties.

The Music Industry Also Demands Labeling

Musicians and various organizations within the music industry have also called for a standardized labeling system to identify AI-generated music. These include the RIAA, the IFPI, the organization behind the Grammy Awards, and SAG-AFTRA. This summer, these organizations advocated for a system that would allow songs to be labeled with indicators such as "AI-Generated" or "AI-Assisted." This would help listeners understand whether a song was created entirely by AI or if AI was used in its production.

Amid the growing popularity of AI-generated music, this move by YouTube represents a significant step toward informing listeners about how songs are created. Other music platforms are also working on similar systems, which could make it easier to identify AI-generated music in the future.
