Your WhatsApp could stop working suddenly! Some users are seeing this alert on the login screen..
WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new security feature that could block access to the app on devices running older versions of iOS or Android. The aim of this change is to encourage users to keep their phone software up to date before using WhatsApp. This is part of broader efforts to strengthen account security and protect users from risks associated with outdated software. According to reports, the feature is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users on both platforms.
WhatsApp could block logins on devices with outdated software
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is displaying a new screen to select Android and iOS users, prompting them to update their phone's operating system before logging in. Affected users will need to go to their phone settings and install the latest available software update before they can access WhatsApp.
This screen also guides users on how to check which software version their device is running. The report states that WhatsApp will not allow users to skip this update and log in directly; in other words, updating the phone's software will be mandatory to use the app.
This change is being implemented via a server-side update, so users do not need to download a new version of WhatsApp to see it. WABetaInfo notes that the feature is currently reaching only a select number of accounts on Android and iOS. WhatsApp has not yet clarified which specific operating system versions will be subject to this login block.
This new measure is being introduced to mitigate the security risks associated with using WhatsApp on devices running older software. Older versions of Android and iOS lack the latest security fixes, increasing the risk of cyberattacks on the device. By mandating a software update before login, WhatsApp aims to ensure that affected devices run on newer, more secure software. Testing of other security features is also underway.
Additionally, WhatsApp is testing a warning for users who connect their accounts to unofficial WhatsApp Web clients. This warning may appear in the 'Linked Devices' section, prompting users to switch to the official client. While these third-party clients connect to WhatsApp accounts, they are neither developed nor supported by the company.
This testing coincides with other efforts by WhatsApp to enhance account security. However, the company has not yet officially confirmed this warning or announced when it will reach general users. The company is also working on new features such as scam alerts and restricted chats.
Currently, the requirement to update the operating system is limited to select Android and iOS accounts. Users who do not see this login warning can continue using WhatsApp as usual. It remains unclear which specific software versions will be subject to this block or when WhatsApp will roll out this rule on a larger scale.
