Most people think that spying through a smartphone is possible only when the camera or microphone is on. If you, too, are under this misconception, be careful. Your phone can reveal secrets of the world around you, even with just GPS. Research by IIT-Delhi has revealed a startling discovery. The research revealed that the GPS in smartphones can detect not only your location but also your surroundings, your movements, and even how many people are in the room. Smartphones can even determine whether you are sitting or lying down.

According to the IIT study, the "microscopic" data collected by GPS on Android smartphones can reveal more than just location. It can secretly reveal a person's movements, environment, or even the state of the room they are in. The study, titled "AndroCon: An Android Phone-Based Sensor for Ambient, Human Activity, and Layout Sensing Using Fine-Grained GPS Information," was published in the journal ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks.

Phone Becomes a Spy Without a Camera or Mic
Researchers have described the AndroCon system, which can act as a covert sensor using "fine-grained" Global Positioning System (GPS) data already accessible to Android apps with precise location permissions. Until now, we thought only cameras, microphones, or motion sensors track our movements, but AndroCon has changed this thinking. This system can tell whether you're sitting, lying down, on the subway, flying, walking in a park, or in a crowded place simply by analyzing the very granular data of GPS signals, such as Doppler shift, signal power, and multipath interference.

Even if you wave your hand near the phone, the system picks it up. This means that even with the camera and microphone off, the phone can still know what you're doing and what's happening around you. Professor Smriti R. Sarangi of IIT-Delhi, who was involved in the study, said that this research was conducted over a period of one year in an area of 40,000 square kilometers and on several phone models. In this, AndroConn identified the surrounding environment with up to 99% accuracy and understood the human activity with more than 87% accuracy.
