UPI ID Privacy Settings: In today's digital era, UPI payments have become an integral part of daily life. From tea stalls to large malls, everyone prefers making payments by scanning QR codes; however, did you know that when you pay using default settings, your personal mobile number can easily be revealed to the recipient or shopkeeper via your UPI ID?

To safeguard your privacy and avoid unwanted calls or data sharing, the NPCI has tightened security standards. You can customize your UPI ID yourself by simply tweaking a setting in your payment app. In fact, following the National Payments Corporation of India's guidelines, creating a custom or alphanumeric UPI ID is very easy. Learn the step-by-step methods to hide your mobile number on PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm, and discover the benefits of UPI Lite.

How to hide your mobile number in payment apps
Below are the methods to change your number-based ID to a custom ID (using your name or random characters) on various popular UPI apps. Update these settings in your payment app today to enjoy secure digital transactions.

How to hide your number on PhonePe
Open the PhonePe app and tap on your profile photo in the top-left corner. Select the bank account for which you wish to change the UPI ID and navigate to the 'Manage' or 'UPI Lite' section. Look for the 'Add' icon at the bottom and click on it. Now, create a new, unique UPI ID using your name or a random combination (e.g., rahul123@ybl). After submitting it, select the 'Set as Primary' option. Your mobile number will no longer be visible to others.

How to hide your number on GPay
Open the Google Pay app and click on your profile photo in the top-right corner. Tap on your bank account under the payment options. Select the bank account you use for payments and click on 'Manage UPI IDs'. You will see various handles such as @oksbi or @okaxis. Activate a new ID by tapping the '+' icon next to a clean or random handle (one that is not based on your mobile number). Afterward, remove the ID linked to your mobile number from the 'primary' status.

How to hide your number on Paytm:
Open the Paytm app and tap on your profile icon. Navigate to the 'UPI & Payment Settings' section. You will find the 'Manage UPI IDs' option, where your existing ID is displayed. Tap the three dots next to it to select your primary UPI ID. Choose a name-based or random alphanumeric ID suggested by the app and set it as the primary ID.

If you frequently make small transactions—such as payments under ₹2,000—you can activate 'UPI Lite' in your app. This feature not only enables faster payments without requiring a UPI PIN but also proves highly effective in keeping your sensitive banking and personal details secure during transactions.
