The good news is that you can now make UPI payments even without internet and without a smartphone. How does UPI work without internet?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched a special USSD service called *99#, which allows you to perform several UPI-related transactions via your mobile network. This service does not require an internet connection; only a mobile network connection is needed on your phone. To avail of this facility, users can make UPI payments using either a feature phone or a smartphone through the *99# USSD service. The only requirement is that the mobile number you are using to dial *99# must be linked to your bank account. You also need to remember your UPI PIN, as no payment can be made without it.

What to do after dialing *99#?

If you don't have internet on your phone, go to your phone's dial pad and dial *99#.

First, select your language on the screen.

Then enter your bank name or the first 4 characters of your IFSC code.

After selecting your bank, review the terms and conditions displayed on the screen.

Then select the option to send money and finally enter your UPI PIN to complete the payment. This method allows you to send money, receive money, check your balance, and perform other UPI PIN-related tasks.

Beneficial for keypad phone users

Many people, especially the elderly or those in rural areas, still use basic keypad phones instead of smartphones. The *99# service is considered very helpful for such users. This service works even in areas with weak network coverage because it only requires a mobile network connection, not an internet connection. According to NPCI, UPI transactions conducted through *99# are completely secure. Every payment is completed using a UPI PIN, which reduces the risk of fraud.
