Will social media be banned for children here too? After Australia, this country is also preparing for it.
Following in Australia's footsteps, Spain is now considering banning social media for children. A law regarding this could be enacted soon. France is also preparing to introduce a similar law.
A few days ago, Australia banned children from using social media. Now, Spain is also preparing to enact such a law. The Spanish government is considering banning social media platforms for children under 16 years of age. The government also wants top company officials to be held accountable for illegal and hateful content on the platforms. There is talk of including this provision in the law as well.
What is the reason for this?
Speaking at the World Government Summit, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that children have been left in a digital space that was not designed for them. He called today's internet a "digital Wild West" and said that the government cannot ignore it. Sánchez said that this problem is not confined by borders and that all of Europe must work together. Spain now wants to work with other European countries to strengthen regulations on social media platforms.
Bill expected next week
The Spanish government could introduce a bill for this law next week. This proposed law will include a ban on social media for children, as well as provisions to hold senior company officials accountable for hateful content on the platforms. It will also consider algorithm manipulation and the promotion of harmful content as criminal acts. After the law is implemented, social media platforms will have to introduce a user age verification system. People in Spain also support this law. In a survey, nearly 80 percent of respondents said that children under 14 years of age should be banned from social media.
Law also introduced in France
France is also preparing to ban social media for children. The National Assembly here has approved a bill that bans social media for children under 15 years of age. Once this bill becomes law, children here, like in Australia, will not be able to use social media platforms.
