The end-to-end encrypted chat feature available on Instagram is now being discontinued. Meta has stated that very few users were utilizing it, which is why it is being removed. Let's find out exactly what E2EE is and why the need arose to remove it.

The American tech company Meta has confirmed a development that has compelled users to pause and reflect on the issue of privacy. Specifically, the company is planning to discontinue the end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) Direct Messages feature available on Instagram. This was the very feature that was considered one of the platform's most robust layers of privacy protection. According to information provided on the company's support page, this feature will cease to function after May 8, 2026. This raises the question: what exactly is end-to-end encryption, and why would a major social media platform decide to discontinue it? Let us explain.

What Does End-to-End Encryption Mean?

Simply put, end-to-end encryption secures your conversations in such a way that only the participants involved in the conversation can read or listen to them. Neither hackers, nor any third-party services—and not even Meta itself—can access these chats. You can visualize it as a conversation taking place inside a locked room, where the only people holding the keys are you and the person you are communicating with.

Essentially, this system operates using specialized cryptographic keys that are uniquely assigned to each device. When you send a message, it is instantly converted into a form of code that is unreadable to anyone else. The message reverts to its original, readable format only when it reaches the recipient's device. This same principle applies to audio and video calls as well.

Why, Exactly, Is Instagram Removing This Feature?

Instagram's parent company, Meta, states that the primary reason behind this decision is the lack of user interest in the feature. According to the company, very few people were actually using encrypted chats. Speaking to the tech website *The Verge*, Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby stated that this feature did not see as much usage as had been anticipated. She added that the company now intends to shift its focus to features that are utilized by a larger number of people and that generate greater value for users on a broader scale.

Concurrently, there has been a long-standing debate surrounding encryption. Various law enforcement agencies and child safety organizations have consistently argued that it becomes difficult to detect illicit online activities within such completely private systems.

For this reason, Meta has clarified that encrypted chats will be discontinued after May 8, 2026. Users currently utilizing this feature will receive advance notifications, enabling them to download their chats, photos, and other media, as they will no longer have access to this content thereafter.
