WhatsAppTips: These 7 secret features will be useful for WhatsApp users...

Social media

WhatsApp was preparing to introduce a username feature similar to those on Instagram and Telegram. This would have allowed users to message each other without sharing their mobile numbers. However, the government has currently halted the launch of this feature due to security concerns. The government has directed Meta-owned WhatsApp not to launch its proposed 'username' feature in India until further discussions are concluded. Additionally, the company has been asked to provide a detailed explanation of how the system will function and how its misuse will be prevented.

WhatsApp has approximately 900 million users in India. The app includes several features that most users are unaware of; these can help enhance privacy and make chatting more secure and convenient. Let’s take a look at some of these features today.

Chat Lock
This feature allows you to hide chats. To use it, first lock the chat. Then, go to the 'Locked chats' folder, enable 'Hide locked chats' in the chat lock settings, and create a secret code. The chat will only appear when you type that exact code into the search bar.

Username Feature
This feature would not allow direct messaging to others; to initiate a conversation, the other user would need to share their PIN. A chat could only begin after the PIN is exchanged. However, the Indian government has currently put this feature on hold.

Voice Transcription
WhatsApp is now offering a voice message transcription feature that converts voice notes into text. To enable it, go to: Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcripts. Currently, the feature is available in select languages, such as English and Spanish.

Chat List
You can now organize chats related to work, family, friends, or specific projects into separate lists. Simply long-press on a chat, select 'Add to list,' and assign it to a new or existing list. This saves time when looking for important chats.

Meta AI Support
You no longer need to open Meta AI in a separate chat. You can get information, generate text, request translations, or brainstorm ideas directly within your ongoing conversations. This allows you to access information while chatting with friends without leaving the chat window.

Messaging Without Saving Numbers
You do not need to save a contact's number to send them a message. Simply type `wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX` into your browser (where '91' is India's country code, followed by the person's mobile number). This will directly open the WhatsApp chat with that person.

Cloud Backup
While WhatsApp chats are end-to-end encrypted by default, backups saved to Google Drive or iCloud are not secured in the same way. Therefore, enabling this specific setting is important. To secure your backup, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end encrypted backup. Then, set a password. Please note that if you forget the password, the backup cannot be recovered.
