The made-in-India Arattai app, seen as an alternative to WhatsApp, will now also include end-to-end encryption for text messaging. This will strengthen user privacy.

Zoho Corporation's Arattai app, which has been making waves for the past few days, is now receiving a feature that will further increase WhatsApp's tension. Currently, only voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted in this Indian-made app. Now, chatting is also being made end-to-end encrypted. With this feature, messages sent on the platform will remain between users and will not be read by any third party, including the company. This feature has been available on WhatsApp for quite some time.

The company is preparing.

Arattai's popularity has increased exponentially in the past few days, and the company is now working on strengthening its privacy features. Speaking to Moneycontrol, the app's CEO, Mani Vembu, said, "We're working on it. In personal messaging, we're introducing a secret chat option, which allows users to enable encryption for private conversations. It's not the default yet. The entire team is now working on making it available to all users." Prior to Vembu's statement, several users on social media had questioned Arattai's security architecture.

Arattai app launched in 2021

Zoho launched the Arattai app in 2021 as a side project, but it failed to gain popularity. Recently, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Piyush Goyal appealed to the public to support it. Following this, downloads rapidly increased, and it reached the top of the list of most downloaded apps on the App Store. Like WhatsApp, it offers features like personal chat, group chat, voice notes, image and video sharing. The company that created it says that complete care has been taken of privacy in it and it will never monetize personal data.
