Meta has announced that WhatsApp will raise its minimum software requirements for Apple devices later this year, giving users a few months to prepare. Starting November 30, 2026, iOS 15.5 (or later) and iPadOS 15.5 (or later) will be required to continue using WhatsApp on iPhones and iPads. Users with devices running older Apple operating systems will be unable to access WhatsApp unless they update their devices. This change is part of Meta's routine practice of periodically reviewing which OS versions to support on its platforms.

This is not the first time WhatsApp has raised its minimum iOS requirements. Last year, the app dropped support for versions older than iOS 15.1, ending compatibility with the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

However, this upcoming update will be less disruptive than the previous one. This is because any iPhone or iPad currently capable of running iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1 can easily be updated to version 15.5. Consequently, no new phone models are being dropped from the list of supported devices due to this requirement. Nevertheless, users must ensure their devices are running the updated software.

Owners of older yet supported models—including the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 4—should verify that their devices are running iOS 15.8.8 or iPadOS 15.8.8, as these are the latest available software versions for these models.

Most users who utilize WhatsApp on Apple devices will remain unaffected by this change. However, those who are still using older hardware and have not updated it recently should take action before the November 30 deadline to avoid any disruption to their messaging service.
