WhatsApp Scam Alert: WhatsApp is working on a new feature to combat online fraud and scams. According to reports, a feature named "Scam Alert" may soon be added to the app; this feature will identify suspicious messages and provide users with a proactive warning. This tool is being specifically designed to detect potentially fraudulent messages originating from unknown numbers. The company asserts that this entire system will operate directly on the user's device, thereby ensuring that end-to-end encryption remains intact. Currently, this feature is in the development stage.

**Keeping an Eye on Scam Messages from Unknown Numbers**

Details regarding the "Scam Alert" feature have surfaced within a recent WhatsApp Android beta update. According to a report by WABetaInfo, this feature will identify potentially fake or fraudulent messages received from unknown contacts. If a message appears to involve scam-like activity, a warning will be displayed directly within the chat interface for the user. Additionally, the alert will indicate that the sender of the message is not present in the user's contact list. Following this, the user will have the option to block and report the number. Conversely, if the user deems the message to be safe, they may choose to continue the conversation.

**On-Device Analysis Ensures Privacy**

According to WhatsApp, the "Scam Alert" feature will function entirely on the user's device. This means that no messages will be transmitted to WhatsApp or Meta's servers for analysis. The entire process of identifying suspicious messages will take place locally on the phone itself. Consequently, end-to-end encryption will remain unaffected, and users' private conversations will remain secure. The report notes that this system will operate in a manner similar to the recently launched "Voice Transcript" feature, which also converts audio messages into text directly on the device.

**Users Retain Full Control**

According to the report, WhatsApp is also developing a transparency tool. This tool will enable users to view exactly when—and for which specific messages—the "Scam Alert" feature was triggered. Significantly, these logs will remain entirely private and will not be shared with WhatsApp. The company plans to keep this feature disabled by default. Users who desire additional security will be able to enable it by navigating to the settings. Currently, this feature is in the development stage; it is expected to be released first to beta testers, after which it may be rolled out to all users in a future update.
