WhatsApp Username Calling: WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a major change that will allow you to call any user using just their username without saving their phone number. WhatsApp is testing this feature on both iOS and Android. Once launched, users will be able to make not only messaging but also voice and video calls simply by searching for their username. However, this could create a new problem of spam calls, for which WhatsApp is also working on security features like the username key.

How will the WhatsApp Username Calling feature work?

According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, code has been discovered in the new beta version of WhatsApp that allows users to directly call someone by typing their username in the search bar. After searching in the Calls tab and finding a profile, the option for voice or video calls will appear. This feature will connect users whose number you don't have, but whose username you know. This feature is currently in development and has not been activated for any user.

Username Key feature will protect against spam.
Since making calls using usernames will be easier, WhatsApp is also introducing a new security feature called Username Key to prevent spam calls. This will be an optional layer, requiring the caller to enter the correct key before the call connects. This will prevent unknown and spam users from directly making calls. This feature is already available in apps like Signal, but WhatsApp is working to make it more secure.

WhatsApp is also working on these features.
WhatsApp is currently working on several new features, including the option to set a cover photo, in-chat storage management, new filters for media and stickers, message limits for new chats, and a quiz feature for channels. All of these features are currently available for beta testing. However, the company has not officially revealed its launch timeline.
