WhatsApp Web Will Require Login Every 6 Hours; Active SIM Must Be Present as per New Guidelines

The Indian government has introduced strict new guidelines for app-based communication platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. According to the new rules, these apps will now require mandatory SIM binding, meaning the registered mobile number’s SIM must be active in the device for the app to function. Additionally, WhatsApp Web will automatically log out every 6 hours, requiring users to log in again.

Why the Government Took This Step

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) stated that while app-based communication services verify users via mobile numbers, having the SIM card physically present in the device was not mandatory. This loophole was being exploited by cybercriminals operating from outside India, posing serious cybersecurity risks.

The notification highlighted that using these apps without a SIM present is a significant threat to telecom security and has been misused in several fraud cases.

How Apps Will Work After the Change

Once the guidelines are implemented:

• Platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Arattai, Snapchat, ShareChat, and JioChat must continuously verify that the SIM registered with the app is present in the device.

• If the SIM is missing, the app will immediately stop functioning.

• WhatsApp Web will auto-log out every 6 hours, and users must log in again to continue using the service.

Strict Action for Non-Compliance

The DoT has warned that violating these instructions may lead to action under the Telecoms Act 2023, Telecom Cyber Security Rules, and other applicable laws. Sources indicate that discussions between the government and major service providers had been ongoing for months, but due to the seriousness of cybercrime, formal orders were necessary.
