WhatsApp has introduced a new secure method for chat backups. Users will now have access to passkey-encrypted backups. This feature is available for both iOS and Android platforms. It offers users a password-free way to back up chats. Users can instantly encrypt WhatsApp chats using their face, fingerprint, or device screen lock.

Passkey-Encrypted Chat Backup Feature on WhatsApp
Passkey allows users to use their device's built-in verification methods, such as fingerprint, facial recognition, and screen lock, to encrypt WhatsApp chat backups. Users can also decrypt their backup files using it. To use this feature, users must open WhatsApp, go to Settings, and then select the Chats option. Next, go to Chat Backup and enable end-to-end encryption. This provides an additional layer of security for WhatsApp backup files.

Before the passkey feature, users had to keep a password or a 64-digit encryption key. Furthermore, if they forgot the password and their phone was stolen or lost, the backup couldn't be recovered. Users can store WhatsApp's passkey in their device's password manager. It can be used to log in to other devices.

WhatsApp has been working on this feature for quite some time. The company released its first beta in August 2024. This feature will be available to all WhatsApp users in the coming days.
