This move was specifically undertaken to curb a rapidly spreading scam known as “Digital Arrest.” According to reports, this crackdown was executed over a period of approximately 12 weeks, commencing in January 2026. Information regarding this matter was also shared with the Supreme Court of India.

What is the “Digital Arrest” Scam?

Digital Arrest is a fraudulent scheme in which scammers intimidate individuals by impersonating police officers or government officials. Through calls or messages, they falsely claim that the target is implicated in a serious crime, such as money laundering or a drug-related case.

To create an atmosphere of fear, these individuals often keep the victim engaged on a video call for hours on end, preventing them from speaking to anyone else. However, the truth is that there is no actual legal provision known as “Digital Arrest.”

How Does This Entire Scheme Operate?

The scammers first instill fear and then demand sensitive information from the victim—such as their Aadhaar number, bank details, or OTPs. Subsequently, they pressure the victim to transfer money under the pretext of resolving the case. The sole objective of this entire operation is to extort money by exploiting fear.

Many Accounts Were Operating from Abroad

Investigations also revealed that many of the accounts linked to these scams were being operated from Southeast Asia, particularly from countries like Cambodia. In this matter, WhatsApp collaborated closely with Indian agencies, including the Indian Cyber ​​Crime Coordination Centre, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Department of Telecommunications.

How Did the Figure Rise from 3,800 to 9,400?

Initially, government agencies had identified approximately 3,800 suspicious accounts. However, WhatsApp’s internal systems took the investigation a step further, leading to the unearthing of a larger network and resulting in action being taken against thousands of additional accounts.

New Safety Features for Users

To combat these scams, WhatsApp has also introduced several new security features. Users will now see a warning displayed on messages received from unknown numbers; information regarding the age of the account will be provided; and the visibility of profile photos can be restricted in suspicious chats. Additionally, Caller Identification features are being enhanced to enable users to easily identify fraudulent calls.

Not Just Account Bans—Focus on the Entire Network

WhatsApp states that it does not merely act on individual complaints but actively strives to identify and dismantle entire scam networks. However, the company also acknowledged that many fraudulent activities occur outside of the app itself; therefore, international cooperation is essential to completely eradicate them.

Supreme Court Expresses Concern

The Supreme Court of India has also expressed grave concern regarding this matter. The Court noted that fraudsters have now resorted to using fake court orders and forged signatures—a development that poses a significant threat to public trust.

If you ever receive a call or message threatening you with arrest, the first thing to do is—do not panic. Disconnect such calls immediately, as no official agency conducts arrests via phone or video calls. Never share your personal information—such as your Aadhaar number, bank details, OTPs, or passwords—with anyone. If someone claims to be an official, independently verify their identity by contacting your nearest police station.
