WhatsApp: Our phone's memory often fills up due to the constant influx of photos and videos on WhatsApp, causing the device to lag or hang. If you are also struggling with your storage filling up, try changing these 3 settings.

WhatsApp Storage: In today’s world, WhatsApp is arguably the most frequently used app on our smartphones. We are often part of various groups—ranging from friends, relatives, and acquaintances to professional or office-related circles—all of which flood our chats with photos and videos. During festive seasons, in particular, we receive a massive volume of greeting-related media, which directly impacts our phone's memory.

Often, the situation reaches a point where the phone's storage becomes completely full, causing the device to lag. In frustration, we might start deleting important old photos or apps, only for the same problem to resurface a few days later. If you are tired of your phone's memory constantly filling up, there is no need to delete anything. You simply need to adjust three easy settings within WhatsApp.

The primary reason for storage filling up is WhatsApp’s "auto-download" feature, which is enabled by default when you set up a new phone. This means that every photo, audio clip, and video sent in any group or chat is automatically downloaded and saved to your phone without your explicit consent—even though most of these files are of no use to you. To stop this, go to your WhatsApp settings and select the "Storage and Data" option.

Under the "Media auto-download" section, you will see three options: "When using mobile data," "When connected on Wi-Fi," and "When roaming." Tap on each of these, uncheck the boxes next to photos, audio, videos, and documents, and then tap "OK." Once this is done, files will only be downloaded when you manually choose to click on them. Turn off 'Media Visibility'

Often, we download a photo on WhatsApp just to view it once, but it ends up being saved directly into our phone's main gallery. Over time, the gallery gets cluttered with unnecessary screenshots, memes, and forwarded videos, leaving no space for our actual photos. To resolve this issue permanently, you should disable the 'Media Visibility' setting.

To do this, go to WhatsApp Settings and open the 'Chats' section. There, you will find a toggle for 'Media Visibility'—simply turn it off. You can also disable this setting for specific individual chats or groups by accessing their respective profile pages. The main advantage of this is that while you can still view downloaded photos within your WhatsApp chats, they will not take up space in your phone's memory or gallery.

Enable 'Disappearing Messages'

If you are part of groups that receive a high volume of messages and files daily, the 'Disappearing Messages' feature can be very useful. It acts as an 'auto-cleaner'; once enabled, all messages and media files in a chat will automatically vanish after a set period. To activate this, go to the 'Privacy' section within WhatsApp Settings, tap on 'Default message timer,' and choose from the available options: 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.

How to free up storage

Furthermore, you don't need to manually sift through your gallery to clear up storage space. Simply navigate to 'Storage and Data' and select 'Manage Storage.' WhatsApp will automatically identify files larger than 5 MB and videos that have been forwarded multiple times. From there, you can clear out all this 'digital clutter' with a single click, freeing up several gigabytes of space.
