WhatsApp has taken a major step to curb cyber fraud and online scams in India. The 'SIM Binding' feature will soon be implemented in the app. This means that it will no longer be possible to use WhatsApp without an active SIM card.

What is SIM Binding?

SIM Binding is a security technique in which the app only works on phones with a registered SIM card. Until now, WhatsApp worked over Wi-Fi or any internet network, whether or not the phone had a SIM card. But with the new rule, if you remove or replace the SIM, WhatsApp will immediately stop working.

Why is this feature being introduced?

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has found that many cybercriminals create WhatsApp accounts using fake numbers to commit fraud. They destroy the SIM cards or use them on other phones, making tracking difficult. SIM binding will prevent such crimes and increase user security.

Beta Testing Begins

According to a report by WABetaInfo, testing of this feature has begun in WhatsApp's Android beta version (2.26.8.6). It is expected to be made mandatory for all Indian users in the coming months.

Inspiration from UPI Apps

UPI apps like Google Pay and PhonePe already have SIM binding. This allows transactions to be made only from the phone with the registered SIM card. Now, WhatsApp is adopting this model to ensure secure chatting and calling.
