WhatsApp: Scammers' tactics will no longer work on WhatsApp; the 'Scam Alert' feature is coming to prevent fraud—here is how it will work..
WhatsApp Scam Alert Feature: "Congratulations! You’ve landed a job," "You’ve won a lottery worth millions," or "Click this link immediately to claim your prize"—such fake and enticing messages have become commonplace on WhatsApp these days. Many users fall prey to cyber fraud after being lured in by these deceptive messages. In light of this growing threat, WhatsApp is currently working on a new 'Scam Alert' feature. This feature will identify suspicious messages originating from any unknown number and issue an immediate warning directly within the user's inbox, ensuring they are alerted in time to avoid falling victim to such scams.
How will the WhatsApp Scam Alert work?
WhatsApp's Scam Alert feature will first scan messages received from unknown numbers. If a message contains any indicators suggestive of fraud or a scam, the feature will issue an alert directly within the chat interface. This ensures the user is made aware of the potential threat beforehand, enabling them to steer clear of any suspicious links, fake offers, or fraudulent schemes.
Only specific numbers will be scanned.
It is important to note that this feature will only scan messages received from numbers that are *not* saved in the user's contact list. Numbers that are already saved in the user's contacts will not be affected in any way.
Users retain full control.
If a chat is flagged as suspicious by the system, the user will be presented with two options:
Block and Report
Trust the Chat
Under the 'Block and Report' option, the user can immediately block or report the suspicious number.
Under the 'Trust the Chat' option, if the user believes the conversation is safe, they can choose to continue the chat.
Privacy remains intact alongside security.
The company has prioritized user privacy just as much as security; there will be absolutely no compromise on privacy during this process.
On-device technology: The entire process of detecting scams will take place locally—directly on the user's mobile device (phone).
No data sent to Meta servers: During the scanning process, none of your messages will be transmitted to WhatsApp's or Meta's servers. Encryption Remains Intact: All your chats will remain end-to-end encrypted, just as always. This means that even WhatsApp itself cannot read your messages.
Privacy: No other user will ever know that you have enabled this feature on your app.
Track the Frequency of Scam Alerts
Furthermore, the company is preparing to introduce a local reporting feature for its users. This will allow users to see when and how many times the 'Scam Alert' system has issued a warning.
Feature Disabled by Default
Notably, this feature will not be forced upon users; meaning, it will not be enabled by default. Users who wish to utilize this feature will need to manually activate it by navigating to their settings.
Feature Currently in Development
At present, this 'Scam Alert' feature from WhatsApp is in the development phase. It has not yet been made available even to beta testers. However, testing is expected to commence in upcoming updates, following which it may be rolled out to the stable version of the app.
