WhatsApp Is Introducing a Powerful Privacy Feature! Messages Will Automatically Disappear 15 Minutes After Being Read..

WhatsApp is testing a new privacy feature named 'After Reading.' With the help of this feature, users will be able to make the messages they send more secure. This means that whenever someone reads your message, it will automatically disappear shortly thereafter. This feature will be particularly beneficial for individuals who share private or sensitive information—such as OTPs, passwords, or addresses.

Currently, messages on WhatsApp remain in the chat until you manually delete them yourself or utilize the 'Disappearing Messages' feature. However, this new feature is set to make this process even faster and simpler.

How Messages Will Auto-Delete in 15 Minutes
The mechanism behind this feature is quite simple. As soon as the recipient opens a message, WhatsApp will initiate a 15-minute timer. Once this timer expires, the message will automatically be deleted from the chat logs of both the sender and the recipient. If the recipient does not open the message at all, it will remain in the chat for 24 hours before automatically expiring. In other words, the message will not be saved permanently.

Currently, this feature has been spotted in the Android beta version 2.26.12.2; however, it has not yet been released to the general user base, as it is still in the development stage.

Why Is It Significant for Privacy?
In today's digital landscape, people share a vast amount of private information on WhatsApp. Consequently, this feature will play a pivotal role in further bolstering user privacy. This is particularly relevant when you send sensitive data—such as an OTP, bank details, a password, or a critical code—as it ensures that such information does not remain stored in the chat history for an extended period.

It Will Work Even with 'Blue Ticks' Disabled
A standout aspect of this feature is that it will function effectively even if 'read receipts' (commonly known as 'blue ticks') are disabled. Typically, blue ticks on WhatsApp serve as an indicator of whether or not the recipient has read a message. However, some users choose to disable this option to safeguard their privacy. With this new feature, WhatsApp will automatically detect when a message has been opened and will trigger a 15-minute timer starting from that exact moment. In other words, this feature will not rely on 'Blue Ticks' yet will still function accurately.

How does it differ from existing features?
WhatsApp already offers a 'Disappearing Messages' option, allowing users to set a timer of 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days. However, this feature is not particularly fast—especially when you need to delete a message immediately. The new 'After Reading' feature addresses this shortcoming, as it ensures the message begins to disappear the moment it has been read. This will provide an experience akin to 'instant privacy.'

Furthermore, WhatsApp already features a 'View Once' option, which allows photos, videos, or voice notes to be viewed only a single time. The new feature builds upon this existing functionality by extending it to text messages as well.

According to reports, WhatsApp is currently testing this feature to evaluate how the timer and deletion system perform. This is why it has not yet been rolled out to the general user base.
