WhatsApp Gears Up for SIM-Binding; Testing Has Begun
WhatsApp SIM-binding: Despite the extension of the SIM-binding deadline, WhatsApp has commenced testing this feature in India. Many users are being informed about this via in-app notifications.
WhatsApp SIM-binding: The messaging platform WhatsApp has initiated testing for SIM-binding in India. According to media reports, numerous users have started receiving in-app notifications stating that, due to local regulations, WhatsApp is required to verify the presence of the SIM card within the device. Currently, this feature is in a trial phase and has not yet been officially rolled out. It is worth noting that, in November of last year, the Government of India issued an order mandating that all messaging platforms must comply with SIM-binding regulations. Recently, the deadline for SIM-binding compliance was extended until the end of this year.
What is SIM-binding?
SIM-binding implies that messaging apps can only be accessed on the specific device containing the SIM card originally used to register on that platform. If that SIM card is removed from the device, becomes inactive, or is replaced by a different SIM, the app will automatically log the user out. Through this new feature, WhatsApp will now periodically—every few hours—verify whether the account is being operated on the device containing the registered SIM card. This measure will help prevent unauthorized access.
How will SIM-binding impact WhatsApp users?
For the time being, this change will have no immediate impact on WhatsApp users, and they will be able to access the app just as they have in the past. The feature is currently in the testing phase, and its official rollout may take some time. Once the feature is fully rolled out, users will only be able to access WhatsApp on the specific device that houses their registered SIM card. This could potentially cause inconvenience for users who rely on secondary devices or who frequently switch their SIM cards. 90-Day Deadline Extended Until December 31, 2026
Last year, when the government mandated SIM binding, messaging platforms were granted a 90-day window to comply with the requirement. In response, messaging platforms—along with companies such as Apple and Google—requested an extension from the government, citing technical hurdles in implementing the measure. Consequently, the government has extended the deadline until the end of this year. This extension will provide companies with ample time to make the necessary modifications to their software and services.
