WhatsApp is constantly introducing new features for its users to make the chatting experience safer and more convenient than ever before. The company is now rolling out a new 'Username' feature that will allow people to communicate with one another without having to share their mobile numbers. This feature is expected to prove particularly useful for those who wish to maintain their privacy.

Following the new update, users will be able to create a distinct username for their accounts. The key benefit of this is that there will no longer be a need to share your mobile number when conversing with strangers.

Others will be able to contact you solely through your username. However, your phone number will remain linked to your account to ensure essential functions—such as login and account recovery—continue to operate smoothly; this number, however, will not be visible to other users.

Currently, this feature has been released to a select group of Android and iPhone users and will be gradually rolled out to everyone in the coming days. If this feature has already appeared in your app, you can easily set up your username.

To do this, first open WhatsApp on your smartphone and navigate to the app's Settings. Next, tap on your profile name displayed at the top of the screen. Within the Profile Settings section, you will see a new 'Username' option. Upon tapping this, you will be prompted to enter a username of your choice.

It is important to note that the username must be between 3 and 35 characters in length. It must contain at least one letter, and you are restricted to using only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores.

As soon as you enter a name, WhatsApp will automatically check whether that username is available. If the name is available, simply tap 'Save' or 'Done,' and your new username will be ready to use.
