What is the Posting Zero trend: Why are people distancing themselves from social media? Why are friends' posts no longer visible?

Social media

The world may seem entirely online, but a new report reveals that social media usage is rapidly declining. A recent large survey revealed that social media usage has fallen by 10%. This survey was conducted on 250,000 social media users across 50 countries. Surprisingly, this decline is most pronounced among young people, for whom social media was once a part of their daily lives.

Why has social media popularity declined?

The biggest reason behind this is the constantly changing face of social media. While people's timelines used to be filled with photos of friends, travels, and everyday life, this space has now been replaced by advertisements, endless reels, and AI-generated content. People are now seeing fewer faces of acquaintances and more faces of strangers. This change has given rise to a new trend called "Posting Zero."

Deepfakes and scams pose a growing threat to privacy.

The term was first coined by Kyle Chayka, a columnist for The New Yorker. He believes that people are gradually stopping sharing their personal lives on social media. He believes that the authenticity of social media platforms has diminished. People are becoming frustrated with the noise, non-stop content, and privacy threats on social media. According to surveys, while social media once attracted simple posts about people's personal lives, fears of privacy, deepfakes, and scams are now making people refrain from sharing them.

AI Ruins Experience

'Posting Zero' is also being linked to the 'Dead Internet Theory,' which states that a large portion of the internet is now populated by bots and AI-based algorithms rather than humans. Consequently, the presence of real users is diminishing.

Profit has changed the purpose of social media.

The survey states that companies' profit-driven drive has changed the very purpose of social media. Advertisements are now shown before the content is shown to people. Social media platforms first engage users, then exploit them to generate profits. To do this, they are constantly shown advertisements or asked to purchase a subscription to remove them. This ultimately degrades the user experience, and users reduce their use of the platform. This process is currently eroding social media, and Posting Zero is a result.
