What is SACHET? Alerts Will Now Ring on Your Phone Before Danger Strikes; Government’s New System to Save Lives

SACHET App: If you heard a sudden, loud beep on your smartphone this Saturday, there is no need to panic. In fact, this was part of a testing exercise for a new disaster warning system initiated by the Government of India. Its objective is to deliver alerts to millions of people within just a few seconds during any emergency situation, thereby enabling them to be alerted in time.

How the SACHET System Works

SACHET is a national platform specifically designed to provide immediate information to the public during both natural and man-made disasters. This system was developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), an organization operating under the Department of Telecommunications. Furthermore, it is being operated in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The system is based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), an internationally recognized technology. The advantage of this protocol is that alert messages are delivered to all devices and networks in a fast, reliable, and standardized format.

Location-Based Alerts

One of the most distinctive features of SACHET is that it sends alerts based on your specific location. This means that messages are delivered only to those individuals who are currently present within an area facing a potential threat. This approach helps minimize unnecessary panic and ensures that the right information reaches the right people at the right time.

Utilization of SMS and Cell Broadcast

Until now, the system has primarily delivered alerts via SMS; however, to further enhance its robustness, Cell Broadcast technology is also being integrated. This technology enables the simultaneous transmission of a message to all mobile phones located within a designated geographical area, thereby reducing network congestion and ensuring rapid alert delivery.

Millions of Messages, Warnings in Multiple Languages

According to government statistics, billions of messages have already been transmitted through this system. These alerts have been issued in approximately 19 Indian languages ​​to ensure that the widest possible audience can comprehend the warnings in their own native tongue. It has included information related to cyclones, floods, adverse weather conditions, and other emergency situations.

Why Recent Testing Was Necessary

Recently, this system underwent large-scale testing across the country, during which people received alert messages in English, Hindi, and other languages. These were merely trials conducted to assess the system's capacity and reach. Therefore, there is no need to panic upon receiving such messages.

This new system demonstrates that India is rapidly scaling up its use of technology in disaster management. In the future, platforms like SACHET could play a pivotal role in ensuring public safety.
