Telecom service providers in India offer a wide range of prepaid and postpaid plans with varying benefits, validity periods, and price points. Companies like Airtel, Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL provide customers with numerous options, allowing them to select the best plan suited to their specific needs and usage patterns. However, you might sometimes feel that your current plan falls short of your requirements or does not offer good value for money. Meanwhile, another telecom operator might be offering exactly—or very close to—what you actually need. In such instances, you can choose to port your existing phone number to a different network using available procedures.

Here is a step-by-step guide to help you easily port your existing phone number from one network to another.

Eligibility for Porting a Mobile Number Between Networks
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), to avail of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) facility:

Your connection must have been active on the current operator's network for more than 90 days.
If you have a postpaid connection, all outstanding bills with the telecom service provider (TSP) must be fully cleared.
You must not have applied for a change of ownership for the mobile number.
The phone number must not be the subject of any legal dispute or a court-ordered stay on portability.
The phone number must not be bound by any contractual obligations.
The SIM card associated with the number to be ported must not have been changed or replaced within the last seven days.

How to Port Your Mobile Number from One Network to Another?
First, generate a valid Unique Porting Code (UPC). You can generate the UPC by sending an SMS from your mobile number. Copy this message and send it to 1900: PORT <10-digit phone number>
You will receive a UPC from 1901, which you will need to submit during this process.
Now, visit a Point of Sale (POS) outlet of your chosen TSP and fill out the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and the porting form.
Next, pay the porting charges and complete the KYC process. You will receive an SMS from the MNP service provider confirming the submission of your request.
You also have the option to withdraw your porting request within 24 hours.
Your number should be ported to the new network within three working days. You will receive confirmation of this via SMS within four hours.
Once you receive your new SIM card with the same phone number, insert it into your handset.
Your SIM will be activated as soon as the verification process is complete.
