Voicemail Feature: Get the iPhone experience on your Android phone! Most people don't know how to use it..

In India, we have become so accustomed to communicating via WhatsApp, SMS, or missed calls that we rarely use voicemail. In contrast, it is very common in the US and other Western countries. The biggest advantage of voicemail is that if you are in an important meeting or unable to answer the phone, the caller can leave an audio message (voice message) for you.

You can listen to the recording later when you are free. While iPhone users have gained support for this feature with iOS 18, Android users often remain a bit confused about it. If you want your Android phone to offer a similar experience, this simple guide is for you.

How does voicemail work on Android?
A common misconception in India is that voicemail is a built-in phone feature. In reality, voicemail depends entirely on your network operator (SIM provider). All your voice messages are stored on the operator's servers.

What are the different types of voicemail?
Basic Voicemail: Here, you have to call a specific mailbox number to listen to your messages.

Visual Voicemail: This is more advanced. It displays a list of messages and their text transcripts directly on your phone screen.

Availability in India
Currently, no telecom company in India offers visual voicemail support for Android. Jio does not provide a voicemail facility, whereas Airtel offers an excellent and completely free basic voicemail service to its users.

How can Airtel users set up voicemail on Android?
If you use an Airtel SIM, the process is completely free and simple:

Open your phone's dialer and dial *321*671#.
A small pop-up will appear on the screen; reply by pressing '1' to activate the service. Within a few minutes, you will receive a confirmation message from Airtel stating that the service has been activated at no extra cost. This message will also contain the voicemail number (52555).

Now, go to your phone's settings, search for 'Voicemail', and open it.
Tap on the voicemail number option, enter 52555, and select OK.
How to listen: Whenever you want to listen to your voicemails, simply go to the dialer pad and long-press the '1' key. You will be connected directly to your voicemail inbox.
Important tip: If you wish to deactivate this service in the future, simply dial *321*673# on your phone.
