Venezuela: Starlink will provide free internet in Venezuela until February 3rd; Elon Musk expressed his support for the citizens on X..
World-renowned billionaire Elon Musk has taken a significant step in support of the people of Venezuela. His space company, SpaceX, has announced that its Starlink satellite internet service will provide free broadband internet in the country until February 3rd. Elon Musk reposted Starlink's announcement on the social media platform X, stating that he is providing this service in support of the Venezuelan people.
Starlink Decides to Offer Free Internet
In its message, Starlink said that it is providing free internet connectivity to Venezuelan citizens for a limited time to ensure that communication is not disrupted during the current situation and that people can stay connected. This announcement comes at a time when Venezuela is undergoing rapidly changing political developments.
Starlink is a satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk's company SpaceX, which provides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet worldwide, especially in remote and rural areas, using a network of thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit. This allows internet access even in areas where traditional internet (such as fiber or mobile towers) is difficult to access. It works by connecting directly to satellites via a dish antenna, enabling fast streaming and online gaming.
Situation Tense After the Removal of Nicolás Maduro
Starlink's announcement comes amidst the US-led operation to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power. The US launched an attack on Caracas, the capital of the South American country of Venezuela, on Saturday. Following this attack, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were apprehended and taken out of the country. A video released by US authorities shows Maduro being taken into custody in handcuffs. In the video footage, Maduro is seen saying "Happy New Year" and "Good night" to reporters and DEA agents.
Court Takes Charge
Following Maduro's departure, Venezuela's Supreme Court issued a major order to maintain law and order in the country. The court instructed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to assume responsibility for the country as acting president. The court stated that Nicolás Maduro is currently temporarily and effectively unable to perform his duties.
Supreme Court Justice Tania D’Amelio, reading the decision on the state-run television channel VTV, explained that according to the country's constitution, if the presidency is vacant or the president is unable to perform his duties, the vice president must assume this responsibility. According to the court, this step was necessary to ensure administrative continuity and national security in the country.
