Use of AI in telecom networks to be monitored; TRAI to introduce new regulations..
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a draft of new guidelines concerning the safe and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within telecom networks and services. The objective is to ensure that the growing adoption of AI in the telecom sector becomes more transparent, secure, and accountable. TRAI has invited suggestions and objections regarding this draft from telecom companies, industry stakeholders, and other concerned parties until November 27, 2026.
Increasingly, telecom companies are leveraging AI to enhance their networks and improve service delivery to customers. AI is being used to streamline network operations, monitor services, and simplify various customer-facing processes. Given this, the establishment of clear regulations governing its use has become essential.
**Telecom Sector Linked to National Security**
According to the Ministry of Communications, the telecom sector is a critical component of the nation's digital infrastructure. Beyond providing mobile and internet connectivity, it plays a vital role in supporting government services, commerce, business operations, and essential information systems. Furthermore, telecom networks are crucial for national security and the functioning of emergency services.
The Ministry emphasizes that as the use of AI expands within such critical networks and services, it is imperative to ensure that the technology is deployed responsibly. Consequently, TRAI has initiated the process of formulating specific guidelines for the telecom sector.
**Seven Principles Established for AI Usage**
This proposal by TRAI is based on the ‘India AI Governance Guidelines’ issued by the Central Government in February 2026. These guidelines outline seven core principles for the use of AI.
These principles include: prioritizing trust, placing people at the center, fostering new technology and innovation, ensuring equitable treatment for all, establishing accountability, making AI systems understandable (explainable), and ensuring that the technology is both secure and sustainable.
Clarity for Companies
The government believes that these principles will bring clarity regarding the use of AI, both for companies and regulatory bodies. This will also help determine accountability in the event of any issues or harm arising from the use of AI.
The full document regarding this proposal is available on the official TRAI website. Telecom companies and other relevant stakeholders may submit their written opinions and suggestions by November 27, 2026.
