UPI will now work in Cambodia too; Indian tourists will be able to make payments without cash or cards...
UPI in Cambodia: If you are planning a trip to Cambodia soon, there is good news for you. Indian tourists will now be able to make payments using UPI in Cambodia. This means the need to carry large amounts of cash or rely on foreign cards will be significantly reduced. India's popular digital payment system, UPI, has now expanded to Cambodia, offering Indians the same seamless payment experience abroad that they enjoy at home.
**Who launched this facility?**
This initiative is a joint effort between India's NIPL (NPCI Overseas Payments Limited) and Cambodia's ACLEDA Bank Plc. Both entities have linked Cambodia's KHQR system with India's UPI network to facilitate easy digital payments between the two countries.
**How the new system works**
Indians will be able to make payments by scanning the KHQR codes displayed at shops and merchant outlets in Cambodia using their UPI apps. The payment process will be the same as in India: first, scan the QR code; next, enter the payment amount; and finally, enter the UPI PIN to complete the transaction. Essentially, making payments abroad will feel just like a domestic UPI transaction.
**Available at lakhs of outlets**
With the implementation of this new system, Indian tourists will be able to use UPI for payments at over 4 million (40 lakh) retail locations across Cambodia. Travelers visiting popular destinations—such as Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville—will particularly benefit from this. Hotels, restaurants, taxis, shopping stores, and various other businesses in these tourist hotspots will be able to accept UPI payments.
**Making travel easier for Indians**
Payment-related issues are often a major challenge during international travel. Foreign cards sometimes fail to work, transaction fees can be high, or extra costs are incurred due to currency exchange rates. This UPI facility can alleviate many of these problems, offering significant benefits to travelers. How will Indians benefit?
No need to carry large amounts of cash
Reduced reliance on foreign cards
Instant payment confirmation
Direct payments from bank accounts
Some currency exchange hassles will be reduced
Easy processing of both small and large payments
