UPI: UPI payments have become an integral part of daily life in India. From grocery stores to online shopping, UPI is used everywhere. However, with its convenience comes a significant risk. Cyber fraudsters are now employing new methods to trick people into making a small mistake that can empty their bank accounts in minutes.

How One Wrong Click Can Lead to Huge Losses

Often, people receive payment requests or links via WhatsApp, SMS, or calls. Sometimes these messages come from familiar names or even appear to be from banks, leading people to click "Approve" or "Pay" without thinking. This single click gives fraudsters access to your account. Remember, you never need to enter your PIN to receive money via UPI.

Beware of Fake Calls and Phishing Messages

Nowadays, fraudsters call pretending to be bank employees, customer care agents, or delivery executives. They try to lure people with promises of refunds, KYC updates, or rewards to get them to reveal their UPI PIN. As soon as someone shares their PIN, the fraudsters immediately carry out transactions. No bank or UPI-related institution will ever ask for your PIN over the phone.

Avoid Screen Sharing and Remote Access Apps

In many cases, fraudsters ask people to install apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer. Through these apps, they gain control of your phone and perform UPI transactions themselves. If anyone asks you to share your screen or grant remote access, refuse immediately.

Simple Ways to Stay Safe

When using UPI, always remember not to accept requests from unknown sources. Never share your UPI PIN with anyone, no matter how trustworthy they seem. Always verify the recipient's name and the amount before making a payment. Also, keep your UPI app updated to the latest version and use a screen lock on your phone.

What to do if you are scammed

If you accidentally become a victim of UPI fraud, immediately contact your bank and the customer care of your UPI app. Additionally, file a complaint on the 1930 cyber helpline number or report it on cybercrime.gov.in. Reporting the incident quickly increases the chances of recovering your money.
