UPI system: Users will have complete control over the UPI system, with the new AutoPay feature..

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has made a major change to the UPI AutoPay system. Users will now be able to view all their active AutoPay payments (mandates) on any UPI app, whether it's Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm. This change will give users complete control over their UPI payment apps and provide a single view of all autopay payments being deducted. Let's learn more about this major change from NPCI.
What is the new rule?
NPCI has released a new framework that allows users to view and manage all their ongoing UPI AutoPay mandates (i.e., payments that are automatically deducted every month, such as OTT subscriptions, mobile bills, or EMIs) from any app. This means that if some of your AutoPay payments are on Google Pay and some on PhonePe, you can view both in one app. Furthermore, users will now be able to transfer mandates from one app to another.
Changes for Merchants
Now, merchants will also be able to run UPI AutoPay mandates through their preferred Payment Service Provider (PSP). In a circular dated October 7, 2025, NPCI stated that all banks and UPI apps must implement this new system by December 31, 2025.
What are the benefits for users?
With this change, users will be aware of which regular payments are being automatically processed through UPI. This will facilitate better financial planning and budget management.
What instructions did NPCI issue?
NPCI has asked banks and UPI apps to create a Manage Bank Accounts or UPI Autopay section in their apps, where users can view all their AutoPay mandates and transfer them to another app if desired. NPCI has also clarified that no app should lure users into porting by offering cashbacks, offers, or notifications. Mandate porting should only be done at the user's discretion.
A new security feature has also been introduced.
NPCI stated in another circular that face authentication (Face ID) and biometric authentication (fingerprint, etc.) will now be available to set or reset UPI PINs. This on-device biometric verification will currently be applicable for transactions up to ₹5,000, but may be expanded later. Overall, this change will bring greater transparency, security, and convenience to UPI users.
