Big Change in UPI Payments: Biometric Authentication to Replace PIN from October 8

India is set to roll out a major update for UPI users. Starting October 8, 2025, users can approve UPI payments using face recognition or fingerprint instead of entering a PIN. The system will use Aadhaar biometric data, making digital transactions faster, easier, and more secure.

According to Reuters, the government has approved this move, and it aligns with the guidelines issued by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India).

How This Differs from the PIN System

Currently, UPI payments require users to enter a numeric PIN to authorize transactions. Under the new system, biometric authentication will take priority, eliminating the need to manually input a PIN. Users can simply approve payments using their face or fingerprint, reducing the risk of PIN theft or fraud.

Security Benefits

NPCI has highlighted that the new feature will enhance security and reliability in digital payments. Since authentication will be biometric-based and linked to Aadhaar, the chances of fraudulent transactions will decrease significantly.

Experts say this move is expected to transform India’s digital payments ecosystem, making transactions more secure, simple, and user-friendly.
