Turn ₹30,000 Monthly SIP into ₹3 Crore in 15 Years? Here’s the Expert-Backed Strategy

For many aspiring investors, achieving a long-term wealth target of ₹3 crore sparks an important question — how much should be invested each month to realistically reach that goal? A popular scenario is whether a monthly SIP of ₹30,000 can grow into such a large corpus over 15 years.

Investor Snapshot

Ajay Kumar Singh, aged 42 and a viewer of The Money Show on ET Now, has set an ambitious goal of accumulating ₹3 crore in the next 15 years. He began investing in August and currently contributes ₹5,000 each to six mutual fund schemes:

  • Bandhan Small Cap

  • Nippon India Small Cap

  • HDFC Midcap

  • Edelweiss Midcap

  • HDFC Flexicap

  • Parag Parikh Flexicap

This totals to a disciplined monthly SIP of ₹30,000.

Expert Assessment of Ajay’s Portfolio

Pankaj Mathpal, MD of Optima Money Managers, reviewed Ajay’s fund mix and noted that while his portfolio is well-diversified, it has a strong tilt toward aggressive categories. With equal exposure to small-cap, mid-cap and flexi-cap funds, Ajay can continue with this setup due to his long 15-year horizon. However, Mathpal cautioned that such an aggressive stance may lead to short-term volatility.

“His goal and timeline allow him to continue with these schemes, but he must be prepared for portfolio fluctuations,” said Mathpal.

Should the Portfolio Be Less Aggressive?

If Ajay prefers stability over sharp market swings, he can slowly cut down his small-cap exposure and increase allocation toward flexi-cap schemes. Flexi-cap funds provide wider diversification, offering smoother returns while still participating in market growth.

Investors comfortable with market ups and downs can continue with the current aggressive structure.

Can a ₹30,000 SIP Grow to ₹3 Crore in 15 Years?

On a 12% annual return assumption, a monthly SIP of ₹30,000 would accumulate roughly ₹1.43 crore, which is significantly below the target of ₹3 crore.

How to Close the Gap and Hit ₹3 Crore

To bridge this gap, Mathpal suggests:

✔️ Increase SIP by ₹6,000 immediately

This raises the monthly contribution to ₹36,000.

✔️ Add a 10% annual Step-Up

This gradually boosts the SIP amount each year, aligning investments with rising income and accelerating compounding.

With these adjustments, reaching the ₹3 crore target within 15 years becomes achievable.

What Is a Step-Up (Top-Up) SIP?

A Step-Up SIP automatically increases the SIP amount every year—typically by a fixed percentage or amount. This approach:

  • Helps investors keep pace with rising income

  • Enhances long-term wealth creation

  • Reduces stress on current cash flow

It’s a powerful tool for long-term goals like building retirement wealth or achieving a high-value financial milestone.

Bottom Line

Through a mix of disciplined investing, a smartly diversified portfolio, timely SIP increases, and annual step-ups, investors like Ajay can confidently work toward creating a ₹3 crore corpus. The key lies in starting early, staying consistent, and adjusting contributions to match growth aspirations.
