Truecaller Family Protection: With cyber fraud and online scams increasing rapidly, Truecaller has launched a new Family Protection feature in India aimed at helping families stay safe from suspicious calls and digital fraud attempts.

The company says the feature is designed to protect users from emerging scam techniques such as digital arrest fraud, identity impersonation, and AI voice cloning scams. With this update, Truecaller is expanding beyond its traditional caller identification services to focus on family-level digital safety.

Before arriving in India, the feature had already been introduced in several international markets, including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya.

How the Truecaller Family Protection Feature Works

The new system operates on a central admin model, where one family member can act as the main administrator. This person manages security settings for the entire family network.

Truecaller describes this administrator role as similar to a “Chief Technology Officer (CTO)” for the family. The admin can monitor alerts and take action if suspicious calls are detected.

The feature has been designed primarily to protect vulnerable users such as children and elderly family members, who are often targeted by scammers.

Real-Time Fraud Alerts for Suspicious Calls

One of the key components of the Family Protection feature is Real-Time Fraud Alerts.

If a family member receives a call from a number that has already been flagged as suspicious or associated with scams, the admin will receive an instant notification. This alert allows the admin to react quickly and warn the person receiving the call.

Such real-time alerts can help prevent fraud before sensitive information is shared with scammers.

Remote Call Hang-Up Option

Another notable feature is Remote Call Hang-Up.

If the admin notices that a family member is on a suspicious call, they can disconnect the call remotely. This means the admin does not have to be physically present with the person receiving the call.

This feature is particularly useful for protecting elderly users, who may unknowingly continue conversations with scammers.

Shared Block Lists for Better Protection

Truecaller has also introduced a Shared Block List system as part of the Family Protection feature.

With this tool:

  • If one family member blocks a suspicious number

  • The number can automatically be blocked across the entire family network

This prevents the same scam number from repeatedly targeting multiple members of the same household.

Safety Dashboard for Managing Family Security

The feature also includes a Safety Dashboard, which acts as a central hub for managing digital protection.

Through this dashboard, the admin can:

  • View security settings for all family members

  • Adjust protection levels for different devices

  • Monitor scam alerts across the family network

This centralized control system makes it easier to maintain consistent protection for everyone.

Privacy Protection: “Safety Without Surveillance”

Truecaller emphasizes that the Family Protection system follows a “Safety without Surveillance” model.

This means that even the admin cannot access personal data such as:

  • Call logs

  • Messages

  • Private conversations

The feature focuses only on security alerts and scam protection, ensuring that users’ privacy remains intact.

Free Version and Premium Family Plan

The basic version of Family Protection is available for free and works on both Android and iOS devices.

However, Truecaller has also introduced a Premium Family Plan, which provides access to additional safety features and enhanced protection tools for all members in the family group.

Why the Feature Matters in Today’s Digital World

India has seen a sharp rise in online fraud, phishing scams, and fake calls, making digital safety more important than ever. Features like Family Protection can play a key role in preventing fraud before it happens.

By allowing one trusted family member to monitor alerts and manage security settings, Truecaller hopes to create a safer digital environment for entire households.

As cybercriminals continue to adopt new tactics, tools that combine technology, awareness, and real-time alerts may become essential for protecting users from financial and identity-related fraud.
