TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has released a new report on the monthly performance of Indian telecom operators. This report reveals how each company performed in January 2026; notably, India's largest telecom company, Reliance Jio, once again delivered an impressive performance during the month. Mukesh Ambani's Jio added 1.6 million (approximately 16 lakh) new users, while competitors such as Airtel and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) successfully added 1.2 million (approximately 12 lakh) and 0.4 million (approximately 4 lakh) users to their networks, respectively.

India's third-largest telecom company, Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), lost 0.7 million (approximately 7 lakh) users. A recent report by JM Financial states that, driven by the rapid expansion of its JioAirFiber service, Jio added 0.78 million (approximately 7.8 lakh) home broadband subscribers in January 2026.

Jio added 0.25 million (approximately 2.50 lakh) subscribers in the FWA (Fixed-Wireless Access) segment. These figures do not include UBR (Unified Broadband) subscribers. Jio is the only operator in the country currently providing UBR services. In the wireless segment, Jio holds a total subscriber base of 503.57 million users; Airtel ranks second with 384.91 million users, while Vodafone Idea stands third with 128.97 million users.

Vi Subscribers: Declining Subscriber Base
Jio possesses the largest mobile subscriber base in the country. Furthermore, beyond just its mobile subscriber base, Jio is also the largest player in the wired broadband sector. The wired broadband market in India is expanding, and Jio commands the largest share of this segment. Vodafone Idea's subscriber base continues to shrink—a trend that does not bode well for the company. Even after launching its 5G services, Vodafone Idea has not yet added any new subscribers. Vi needs to acquire users to bring about a significant turnaround in its business. As for Jio and Airtel, both telecom companies are adding new users every month. BSNL, meanwhile, is adding new users only occasionally. It is expected that Vodafone Idea, too, may soon begin adding new users, as the company is continuously working on providing a better network experience.
