TRAI cracks down on spam calls: AI to identify them; connections to be disconnected if five numbers are flagged..
Telecom regulator TRAI has further tightened regulations to curb Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC). Under these rules, it has become mandatory for telecom companies to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning filters to identify suspicious spam calls and messages. According to the revised norms, if five or more numbers belonging to a spammer are identified within 10 days, their telecom connection may be disconnected, and they will be blacklisted for one year. Additionally, a charge of five paise per minute will be levied on automated calls.
**Misuse of numbers leads to disconnection**
If any company's number or message template is found to be misused, the telecom company must take action to deactivate it. If a telemarketer is found to be responsible, action may also be taken against their other numbers, and they could be blacklisted.
**Right to appeal for customers**
**Important Information**
Customers dissatisfied with the resolution of their complaint regarding unsolicited commercial communication may file an appeal within 15 days. This can be done using the DND app, the telecom service provider's app or portal, or by calling 1909. Prior declaration will be mandatory for auto-dialers, robocalls, and calls featuring pre-recorded or AI-generated voices. Call management apps will not be permitted to collectively mark business number series—such as 1600 and 1601—as spam or block them.
