TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) and DoT (Department of Telecommunications) have decided that the caller's real name will automatically appear when a phone call arrives. This feature will be the default for everyone. This will help identify scam and spam calls early. The purpose of this decision is to prevent fraud and increase digital security. This service will be available on 4G and newer networks. This will help protect people from fraudulent calls. Due to technical issues with 2G and 3 G networks due to low bandwidth, users of these networks will not be able to see the caller's real name.

Only the name provided at the time of connection will be visible.
A PTI report states that TRAI and DoT stated that the caller's real name, provided at the time of connection, will be displayed by default when receiving a call. However, TRAI had initially suggested that this service should only be enabled upon request. However, DoT disagreed. The two sides subsequently reached a consensus and decided on this decision.

TRAI and DoT Reach Consensus
In February 2024, TRAI sent a recommendation to DoT, stating that the Calling Name Presentation (CNP) service should only be activated upon the caller's request. DoT returned the recommendation, stating that the service should remain enabled by default. If someone does not wish to use it, they should follow the process to disable it. This will reduce cybercrimes such as digital arrests and fraud.

Names Will Not Be Visible
TRAI and DoT decided that the names of those who have availed of the Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) facility will not be visible. This facility is available to ordinary people, intelligence officers, and senior officials. Operators will conduct thorough investigations for ordinary people and provide information to law enforcement agencies. Bulk connections, call centers, and telemarketers will not be eligible for this service. This will maintain privacy.

Conversations will be held with the Ministry of Electronics and IT.
DoT will now take the final decision on the framework for the CNP service and will decide how it will be implemented by default. The Ministry of Electronics and IT will be consulted for phone support. The government will issue directives soon, which will help telecom companies prepare. This will provide relief from fraudulent calls and enhance security. This step will prove to be very helpful in preventing cybercrime.
