Getting stuck in long queues at toll plazas, compromising fuel efficiency, and occasionally getting into arguments while traveling on highways are all set to become things of the past. The Government of India is introducing an advanced technology that will allow your vehicle to glide seamlessly along the highway while the toll amount is deducted automatically. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, recently announced at the 'Logistics Power Summit and Awards 2026' that a barrier-free tolling system will be implemented across several national highways in the country by December 2026. Let's explore how this new technology will function and the role Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play in it.

**How will this new 'Barrier-Free' system work?**
Under this new framework, the familiar boom barriers—which often cause traffic congestion—will be completely removed from highways. Instead, specialized high-performance cameras and sensors will be installed at the entry and exit points of the highways. As soon as your vehicle passes beneath these cameras, the embedded 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition' (ANPR) technology will scan your vehicle's license plate in the blink of an eye.

Once the license plate is identified, this smart system will link it to your RFID-based FASTag account, and the applicable toll amount will be automatically deducted based on the distance traveled. The greatest advantage of this system is that you will neither have to slow down your vehicle nor come to a complete halt to pay the toll. Simply keep driving at your own pace, and this technology will handle all the remaining tasks seamlessly in the background.

**What role will AI play in this system?**
Since vehicles on the highway will be traveling at speeds of 100 km/h or higher, standard cameras alone would be incapable of performing this task. The true intelligence driving this entire system will be Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI will ensure that this technology remains highly accurate and foolproof. For instance, when a number plate becomes dirty or obscured due to dust or mud on the road, AI's machine learning algorithms—leveraging their advanced capabilities—will be able to read it with 99% accuracy. Furthermore, this system will perform 'vehicle classification' in the blink of an eye. That is, by instantly analyzing the image captured by the camera, it will identify whether the vehicle is a car, a bus, or a truck, thereby ensuring that the correct toll amount is deducted.

AI will also play a pivotal role in terms of security and transparency. It is capable of preventing fraud; if an individual attempts to use another vehicle's number plate, the AI will immediately detect that the model and color of the car recorded in the 'Vahan' database do not match the vehicle currently on the road. In such instances, the system will instantly issue an alert. Additionally, AI will be responsible for traffic and server management, simultaneously processing data from thousands of vehicles to ensure that the system does not crash—even during peak hours—and that there are no errors in toll payments.

What happens if someone attempts to pass through without paying the toll?
The most significant feature of this high-tech, AI-based system is that evading it will be virtually impossible. If a vehicle passes through the highway without a FASTag, with an insufficient balance, or in violation of toll regulations, the AI system will instantly transmit the vehicle's complete data to the 'Vahan' portal. Immediately thereafter, an e-notice or e-challan will be sent to the vehicle owner's registered mobile number.

Moreover, if an individual fails to pay the toll within the stipulated timeframe, strict action may be taken, potentially resulting in the suspension or blacklisting of their FASTag. Furthermore, they may face heavy fines in the future, as the existence of digital records will make it extremely easy to identify and track the location of the violator.

What are the benefits of this system for the country and for you?
This new system will not only make your commute smoother but will also prove to be a game-changer for the nation's economy and environment. The most immediate and direct benefit will manifest in the form of savings in both time and fuel. When vehicles no longer have to halt at toll booths, journeys that previously took hours will be completed in mere minutes, and the fuel wasted through the repetitive use of brakes and clutches will be conserved. Furthermore, the elimination of long traffic jams at toll plazas will lead to a significant reduction in toxic fumes (carbon emissions), thereby helping to keep our environment clean.
