TikTok recently announced the creation of a new joint venture (JV) for its US operations. Following this announcement, a large number of people in the US have started deleting the TikTok app. According to market research company Sensor Tower, the number of US users who deleted TikTok in the last five days was approximately 150% higher than the average for the previous three months.

What is the real reason for the controversy?
Last Thursday, TikTok announced a new joint venture for its US operations, led by Adam Presser. With this change, users began receiving notifications to accept a new privacy policy, which has sparked a new controversy.

Users are concerned that TikTok may collect highly sensitive and private information about them. This includes information about a user's race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, transgender or non-binary status, as well as their citizenship (immigration status) and financial records.

However, several reports suggest that these rules are not entirely new and similar terms were present in the August 2024 privacy policy. Despite this, the announcement of the new joint venture has reignited concerns about data security.

Creators angered by loss of trust.
Several prominent content creators have expressed a loss of trust in TikTok and have deleted their accounts. Dre Ronan, who has nearly 400,000 followers, wrote on Threads that if she can leave her biggest platform, others can too. Nadya Okamoto, with over 4 million followers, said that the company did not communicate clearly with creators, creating an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Additionally, the app has experienced technical difficulties in recent days, preventing many users from uploading videos. TikTok stated that this was due to a power outage at a data center in the US.

Other apps benefit
While there hasn't been a significant drop in TikTok's active user base yet, its competitor apps have seen a substantial increase in users. UpScrolled saw an increase of over 1000%. Skylight Social saw a 919% increase, and Rednote saw a 53% increase. Currently, many creators are shifting their content to other platforms like Instagram and YouTube due to the uncertain environment.
