Google recently concluded its Google I/O 2026 event held in California, where the tech giant introduced a highly useful feature for Android 17 called "Continue." This latest concept bears a resemblance to Apple's Handoff feature. It is designed to make it easier for users to switch tasks between different Android devices. With Continue On, users can start using an app on one Android device and seamlessly pick up exactly where they left off on another device. Google has confirmed that, initially, this feature will support transitions between mobile phones and tablets. To demonstrate this feature, Google utilized the Google Docs and Gmail apps.

How does Google's 'Continue' feature work?
In a developer blog post, Google shared an overview of the Continue On feature. The company described it as a cross-device continuity tool that is set to arrive with Android 17 (API Level 37). It is designed to enable users within their Android ecosystem to begin working in an app on one device and seamlessly continue that same task on another device.

Google states that the Continue On feature is designed to function bidirectionally, meaning that both supported Android devices can send and receive app activities. At launch, the feature will initially support transitions specifically between smartphones and tablets. With this update, if a user is working in an app on their Android phone and subsequently picks up their tablet, Android can automatically display a suggestion for that same app in the tablet's taskbar. Tapping on that suggestion will resume the activity exactly from the point where the user left off.

The company also shared a video showcasing the Continue On feature using the Google Docs app. It demonstrates a scenario where a document is being edited on an Android smartphone and the work is then seamlessly continued on an Android tablet linked to the same Google account. A prompt for this appears in the tablet's taskbar.

In a second video, the "Continue" feature transfers the Android Gmail app session from a phone to the Gmail web interface on a tablet. This opens the same email thread. Google states that if the corresponding native Android app is installed and available on the receiving device, the apps can be configured to launch that specific application instead.

This "Continue" update from Google appears quite similar to Apple's Handoff feature. With Handoff, users can initiate a task on one Apple device and pick it up right where they left off on another Apple device. To utilize this feature, users must be signed in to the same Apple account across all their devices and ensure that both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled.
