After pouring the milk out of a plastic pouch, you typically discard the empty bag, but have you ever stopped to consider just how much harm these pouches inflict upon the environment? Mother Dairy gave this matter serious thought, and the company recently announced that its milk will now be supplied in naturally degradable pouches. The primary objective behind introducing this new packaging is to reduce plastic waste and help preserve the environment. June 5th marks World Environment Day 2026, and starting on this very day, consumers across Delhi-NCR will begin receiving their milk in these special pouches; the initiative will launch with the company's Cow Milk variant.

**What Technology Lies Behind This Pouch?**
The new pouches utilize degradable packaging technology. Thanks to this innovation, the special pouch first transforms into a bioavailable wax; subsequently, microorganisms (microbes) present in the soil break it down further into natural elements. Regarding this unique packaging, the company states that while standard plastic takes centuries to decompose, these special pouches naturally disintegrate and dissolve into the soil over the course of several years.

Degradable packaging technology encompasses a set of principles drawn from materials science and engineering, employed to create packaging materials that—upon contact with microorganisms—naturally and easily break down into their constituent natural elements.

Jayateerth Chari, Managing Director of Mother Dairy, stated, "We invested over four years in research to develop this naturally degradable milk pouch. Its most remarkable feature is that, once it integrates into the soil, it leaves absolutely no trace of plastic behind."

**Will This Special Packaging Lead to Higher Milk Prices?**
You have now learned about the technology powering these pouches and how they naturally decompose into the soil. However, a question likely lingering in the minds of many consumers is: will this initiative by Mother Dairy result in an increase in milk prices? In response to this query, the company has clarified that the introduction of this special packaging will have no impact on pricing; the milk will continue to be sold at its existing price point.
