Reducing Electricity Bills: The Indian government is planning a major nationwide implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce electricity bills and ensure efficient power usage. In an interview with ANI, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Shashank Mishra, stated that distribution companies will now be able to easily identify areas with power theft and quickly rectify technical problems with the help of AI. This will reduce bills for ordinary citizens and prevent electricity wastage. But how exactly will AI reduce electricity bills, detect technical faults, and catch theft? Let's try to understand this in simple terms.

How will AI reduce electricity bills?
Shashank Mishra said that in most homes, electricity is wasted due to faulty wiring or earth leakage. With the help of AI, such malfunctions will be detected daily. Companies will immediately identify homes or areas where electricity is being used abnormally. This will reduce technical losses. Today, these losses are the reason why power companies incur losses, and these losses are recovered from the bills of ordinary customers.

Large Language Models will also be used.
The ministry is also considering using large language models like ChatGPT. These will help in making decisions faster, automating paperwork, and monitoring the entire network 24/7. Mishra said that this technology will empower us to work faster and more accurately than ever before.

What do experts say?
Energy experts say that India currently has the capacity to generate more electricity than it needs. Data centers are rapidly increasing in the country, which will significantly increase the demand for electricity. If we formulate the right policies, India can become a major global electricity supplier. By treating electricity as a commodity, we can meet both domestic and international needs.

New Electricity Amendment Bill coming.
In October, the government released the draft of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025. This bill aims to rationalize electricity prices, eliminate hidden subsidies, and provide cheaper electricity to industries. Furthermore, subsidies for farmers and poor families will remain fully protected. The bill clearly states that every customer will receive affordable and high-quality electricity.
